Is Buying a House Always Better Than Renting? Two Salado Realtors Weigh In

Buying a house is often described as the American dream. But does that mean everyone should own a home?

In Episode 3 of The Salado Group Podcast, local Realtors Mallory Anthony and Becky Judkins discuss some of the things they used to believe about real estate and how their perspectives have changed with experience.

One of the biggest surprises? Sometimes renting is exactly what someone wants, and that’s perfectly okay.

Things We Used to Believe About Real Estate

Mallory and Becky discuss the realities of homeownership, what sellers do that makes Realtors nervous and their favorite upcoming Salado events.

Not Everyone Wants to Be a Homeowner

When Mallory first got her real estate license, she believed she could help everyone become a homeowner. Years later, she’s realized that purchasing a home isn’t necessarily the right choice for every person or every stage of life.

As Mallory explains:

“Not everybody wants to be a homeowner.”

Some people value the convenience of apartment living. They don’t want to maintain a yard, worry about replacing an air conditioner or handle unexpected home repairs. Others want the flexibility to travel or relocate without having to sell a property.

Homeownership is a commitment, and the responsibilities don’t disappear after closing day.

Homeownership Can Help Build Long-Term Wealth

That doesn’t mean buying a house isn’t worth it.

For many people, owning real estate offers an opportunity to build equity, establish long-term financial stability and create memories in a place they can call their own. However, appreciation and investment returns are never guaranteed.

For some buyers, the financial advantages of homeownership outweigh the ongoing maintenance expenses. Others may find that renting provides more flexibility for their lifestyle.

The important thing is understanding what you’re signing up for before you purchase.

What If You Want to Own a Home but Hate Yard Work?

Here’s where having a knowledgeable local Realtor can help.

In Temple, Mallory has noticed more townhome options that may appeal to buyers who want to own property without maintaining a large yard.

If outdoor maintenance is the one thing making you hesitate about buying a house, it may be worth considering a property with a smaller lot, a townhome or a community offering certain maintenance services.

Just remember that townhomes and HOA communities can have their own expenses and maintenance obligations. You’ll want to review those before purchasing.

The Right Home Is the One That Works for You

Whether you’re considering your first home in Temple, relocating to Salado or exploring the surrounding Central Texas communities, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

A house with acreage might be one buyer’s dream and another buyer’s maintenance nightmare.

You may even prefer renting your primary residence while owning a separate investment property, another possibility Mallory and Becky discuss during the podcast.

The goal isn’t simply to buy a house. It’s to make a housing decision that supports your finances, priorities and long-term plans.
